In Taiwan, the two major branches of Chinese—Min Nan and Hakka—are both distant relatives and close neighbors, sharing many common lexical items. These shared words have formed over various periods in history and for different reasons. Do you know how historical linguists analyze these common lexical items? This lecture will provide an accessible yet in-depth exploration, illustrating various types of shared vocabulary between Min Nan and Hakka, and explaining the different deep and surface-level relationships between these two ethnic groups.
