Before the introduction of certain audiovisual media such as photographs and video recordings, people largely documented their times and expressed their feelings through writing. Those skilled in painting or the crafts, however, may rather depict their surroundings in images or other designs. Some wielded their paintbrushes to recreate magnificent natural landscapes in vivid detail or within their pieces transform their hometowns into ideal paradises; and others lend attention to the beauty that is often buried and neglected in daily life. In this talk, we will together appreciate representative artworks in Taiwan and explore how over the past century both local artists and foreign artists residing in Taiwan have observed and recorded the natural landscapes before them, incorporating them into the soul of their own creations.
