Muslims, adherents to Islam, constitutes around 40% of the total population, reaching remarkable 240 million high. There is a growing number of Muslim migrant workers from SEA in today's Taiwan society . The significance of Islam and Muslims in the the region is undeniable. “The Elephant's Journey: Overseas Orders of the Tokugawa Shogunate”/ Cheng-Wei Wu Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684-1751), the shogun of Japan, once placed an order for elephants with Chinese ship merchants. In the summer of 1728, the merchants successfully brought two elephants from Vietnam. As Tokugawa Yoshimune resided in Tokyo, one may wonder why he wanted to personally witness the elephants. Where did these two elephants come from, and how did the Chinese ship merchants fulfill the shogun's wish? This talk will unfold the story of the shogun's elephant orders, showcasing the close connections in the 18th-century maritime interactions in East Asia.
