Over the course of time, the lives of people, aside from being impacted by major national or social events and trends, are largely uniform in their experiences. Even some of the experiences of those from ancient times have left traces in our daily lives, but they often seem unrecognizable as they have gone unobserved or have been altered. This open lecture primarily shares a few ways in which the ancients interacted with the sea in their daily lives, with selected topics exploring sea crossing and transport, shipwrecks and piracy, maritime livelihood, a slice of quotidian life, as well as beliefs centered on the sea and their later shifts, among others.
