The theme of this year’s International Museum Day “Museum for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion” is a call for all cultural institutions to step up efforts towards diversity and inclusion. The online exhibition, “Women in Museum,” showcases a host of roles assumed by women: a young girl, a goddess, a civilian, a wet nurse, a noblewoman, a member of the indigenous peoples, a member of the ethnic groups in China’s Southwest regions, an archaeological worker, a queen, an empress regnant, an empress dowager, as well as a museum staff member and a volunteer. The types and materials of showcased items include oracle bones, jade, Han dynasty bamboo slips, stone rubbings, clothing, books, field work photos, archived documents, archaeological artefacts, as well as souvenirs of the IHP Museum. These exhibits cross a long span of time and space, ranging from the frontiers to the central plains, and from prehistoric modern times. The organizers hope to illustrate the museum’s diversity and inclusivity by showcasing the many roles of woman and the exhibits of varying types and materials.
