How should we understand the world, social groups, and the self as the pandemic reshapes all social relations? How do people respond to the collective anxiety and paranoia in both of the physical and virtual spaces? In this talk, Jen-Ho Chang and Wen Liu are sharing their observations of the human responses to the pandemic through multidimensional mediums including behavioral surveys, online big data, and the production and circulation of memes. Chang will examine the psychological characteristics when individuals experience quarantine, face city and nation-wide shut down, and get infected through cross-national data. Liu will speak about the contagiousness of conspiracy theory through the psychoanalytic concept of “paranoia,” and explore the potentially reparative functions of memes on social network sites.
