The term ‘Cold War’ has garnered international attention due to the current contours of international politics. But why is it called the ‘Cold’ War? Is it a policy, strategy, or status? In line with the theme of the Institute of Modern History’s open day—‘Taiwan and the Cold War’—this talk will begin with the postwar international situation and then briefly introduce the origins of the Cold War and its aftermath. The audience can expect to learn how the framework of the Cold War gradually formed in East Asia alongside the Chinese Civil War, the Korean War, and the two Taiwan Strait Crises. This will help us better understand how Taiwan has managed to survive in the international chessboard.
