Taiwan only represents 0.025% of the world's land. However, within the rich natural environment of Taiwan's territorial waters, current statistics from the Research Center for Biodiversity, Academia Sinica, shows there are 3,000 fish species, representing about one tenth of the world’s variety.
Taiwan is fortunate to be located at one of the richest areas of marine biodiversity in the world, being at the north rim of the east Indian Islands, as well as the meeting point of the East China Sea Current, the South China Sea Current, and the Kuroshio Current. As a result, Taiwan is blessed with rich and diverse fisheries in its territorial waters.
