
Last year, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) issued amendments to the “Administrative Measures for the Implementation or Use of Specific Medical Technology and Inspection, Diagnostic or Medical Devices”. This opens up six areas of cell therapy technology including autologous transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells in the treatment of extensive burns and chronic wounds. Indeed, stem cells have tremendous potentials to help us treat a wide range of degenerative diseases. Clinical trials involving stem cells are underway for many diseases and researchers continue to explore new avenues using stem cells in medicine. However, the current applications of stem cells are sometimes exaggerated by the media as people do not fully understand the limitations. The talk intended to help people understand both the potential and the limitations of stem cell treatments.
