About Open House
Doing research is a great adventure of the human mind.
Academia Sinica, an institution focusing on basic research, also devotes itself to in-depth scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, mathematics, and life sciences. In addition, we shoulder the mission of promoting popular science so as to inform the public about what Academia Sinica is doing. Therefore, we have held an Open House every year for the past 21 years, an event that has ignited passion for scholarship in numerous students. Our Open House has evolved into one of Taiwan’s most popular science events, attracting huge numbers of visitors and breaking records on several recent occasions.
Staff from 31 of Academia Sinica’s research centers, institutions, and museums have racked their brains to arrange over 300 fascinating demonstrations, lectures and hands-on activities. Our world-class facilities and laboratories will be open to the public, so that visitors both young and old can get a sense of what it means to do research, and benefit from access to the sciences.
The 2019 Academia Sinica Open House now invites you to set forth on the grand adventure of the humanities and sciences.

About Black Hole Exhibition
Black holes ain’t as black as they are painted. ──Stephen Hawking(1942 – 2018)
The first image in history of a black hole 50 million light years away was made public on April 10, 2019. The announcement of this discovery of the century was simultaneously made in six international cities, including Taipei, so as to spread the news worldwide. On the evening that the black hole image was being released, the online audience viewing this event on Academia Sinica’s channel peaked at 80,000, a record-breaking number.

This pioneering result was announced by members of the Event Horizon Telescope, a multinational research project featuring the participation of Academia Sinica’s Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Three out of the eight radio telescopes used to capture images of this black hole were operated with the support of Academia Sinica, which showcases Taiwan’s leading position in global scientific research efforts.
Since the year 2019 marks a crucial moment in history of astronomy, the 2019 Academia Sinica Open House will present a “Black Hole Special Exhibition”. We invite you to join our enthusiastic astronomers in exploring the mysteries of black holes!
