The sea goddess Mazu (960-987) arose in the Dynasty of Song in China. After thousand years of transmission, its belief and cult have spread over China and oversea Chinese communities. Firstly, this talk will delineate the life story, the political, economic, and social context of the emergence of the Mazu cult, and the geographical distribution of the Mazu cult. Secondly, this talk will describe the process of the Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan, and the localization of the cult in Taiwan.
