It has been over half a century since the invention of laser. In this period not only laser technology itself has seen great advancement, applications of laser technology have also grown extensively and played important roles in modern science and technology. In this presentation we shall discuss the principle, construction, and characteristics of lasers and their applications in modern science and technology, including laser disc, fiber communication, laser printer, laser ranging, laser machining, laser scalpel, laser-guided weapon, laser-guided lightning, holography, laser spectroscopy, sodium star, laser-cooling of atoms, laser-wakefield accelerator, laser fusion reactor etc.
