The Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies has prepared five presentations that will dive into the complexities of cultural exchange. The presentations will be approximately 15-20 minutes long, accompanied by stories and explanations of each image. A short and easy quiz with 5-8 questions (depending on the available remaining time) will follow. Winners will be rewarded with a special gift designed for this event.
Session 2, 10:30~11:00 Pi-Ling Chen: “The Imagination
of Chinese and Western Foreign Characters: Taking the Manila Manuscript as an Example”
The Asian portraits depicted in the Manila Manuscript, a work published in 1590, are similar to
the Asians portrayed in the Popular Encyclopedia for Daily Use. These will help us to understand
the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western imaginations of Asian
characters.
