The vigorous development of smart technologies has made data become everything about our life. The combination of data-driven technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, Automated Vehicle Systems (AVs), Internet of Things (IoT), genetic engineering, and quantum computing, is bringing us towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The data-driven technologies have made us and our life smarter; however, the fusion of disruptive technologies inexorably shifts us to face new legal and ethical challenges. For example, Alexa might be one of the chic choices for smart home, but consumers are worried about the virtual assistant might pose possible privacy infringement where Alexa has automated perform the recording even when it is not voice-activated. It is said Amazon’s engineering has been secretly access to the recording. Whether the data collected by driverless cars can be offered for secondary use, has sparked heated debates. Whether professional autonomy still exist while adapting medical AI? Can medical AI be liable for malpractice might be another interesting issue. It has been found the risk assessment tool used for criminal justice and law enforcement is biased in race in the US. Would the use of algorithm inadvertently deepen the bias in society? Who can explain the black box effect in algorithms? When individuals are tagged into data and numbers, will we lose the freedom and ourselves?
